A couple of weeks ago the Handlers had friends in for the weekend. On their last day, the Handlers took them into Colonia for a quick tour. One of the places that they went to was the Centro Cultural Bastion del Carmen. This is the main cultural center for Colonia and a place that the Handlers used to frequent for exhibits and shows when they lived in town. The building itself, built in 1880, was used in different capacities over the years: a factory for making soap, gelatin, lampblack, wood glue; a receiving place for washing sheepskin; and various hardware stores. It sits right on the water overlooking the bay with good views of the beaches along the
Rambla.
Just to the left of the main building, there are some stairs that go underground. Dan was the most inquisitive because he was actually looking for a bathroom... When he failed to reappear, the rest of the group went down. This is what they saw.
Apparently the water enters from the left during storms filling the reflecting pool. It cools the theater above in the summer, and improves the acoustics of any performance.
Not sure that the sight of water was helpful for Dan, but the detour was greatly enjoyed by others.
